Stark inequality: boys continue to under-perform at school
Girls have outperformed boys in year 12 studies once again this year: with a higher average ATAR in Victoria (64.4 vs 62.2); and taking 64% of the First in Course awards for the NSW HSC. See the 16 December article from the Sydney Morning Herald "Girls blitz boys among top students":
Boys & young men are being short-changed by the education system in Australia... Where are the literacy programs for boys in primary school, to address the huge inequality? Where's the support for young men to enter university?
The year 12 retention rate in Australia is 10% lower for boys than it is for girls: http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/Lookup/4102.0Main+Features40Mar+2011
The inequality for men increases over time, with 50% more female uni graduates than men in 2012:

Literacy rates are about 8-9% lower for boys (ranging from 3-16% lower, depending on the age & whether measuring reading or writing). The number of men starting uni is 21% below the number of women commencing university. There's a dire shortage of male childcare workers (only 3%) and the proportion of male primary school teachers has gone backwards (from 30% to 20%).
Put the shoe on the other foot & there would be an outcry about the unfairness to girls... But where is the community support for boys & young men? Where are the programs & resources to teach boys effectively? This issue deserves the concerted effort of academics, media & government, as well as a National Action Plan to improve the education of boys & young men in Australia.
