ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION

 Dr. DOUGLAS REEVES ON ASSESSMENT

This is one of my favourite presenters who speaks on this topic.

HIS THEMES

- get rid of the zero in assessment

- eliminate the concept of the average.

It just does not make sense in the 21st Century working world

- Use a 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 grading scale

Percentage grades do not make mathematical sense.

- the focus on assessment is motivate students to "get the work done".

His work is supported by the MOE.

Check out his video.

ARE GRADES A THING OF THE PAST?

I HOPE SO!
It's an industrial revolution strategy.

Do you want a doctor or teacher with 85% ?
Or do you want a professional or educated applicant that is knowledgeable with refined skills?

I work in an academic environments where students and professors have achieved  high academic "GRADES" but they are not always a good fit for their chosen professions and are not very successful. There were other skills that they needed to develop and these skills were not reflected in their high "Grades".

Check out this article on Grades.

Lets use a system that promotes learning and excellent teaching and does not prevent and limit it.

Marks and Grades

How useful are they anyway?
Here is an article by Alfie Kohn who indicates his research shows marks and percentage grades do not promote learning.

There are other ways to assess work, provide feedback and promote learning in the 21st Century.
Read and reflect on his message.
